Quizo is a general knowledge trivia game played at numerous bars in the Philadelphia region.  Quizo was originally started by Patrick Hines a Philadelphia native who now lives in Ireland with his Wife and family. Pat writes the questions for quiz that run each week in many area bars.

“One Tuesday night in 1991, I walked into the lounge of Duke’s Hotel, in Belfast [coincidentally, right next door to the School of Education at Queen’s University, where I am currently working on a Masters degree – [funny how things work]. As we sat down, I noticed a sheet of paper on the table pictures on it – pictures of people’s faces. Well, half a face – the photocopied photographs had been cut in half.

“What’s this?” I asked.

“Oh, it’s just a pub quiz” replied my jaded friend.

Not to me it wasn’t. I played that night [came in dead last], and every Tuesday night for the next six months. I was hooked. When I returned to the States in the summer of 1992, I immediately began to suffer from “pub quiz withdrawal.” I needed my fix, but there was nowhere to go.”

While other trivia games exist at pubs in and out of Philly, Pat Hines meticulously crafts each of our Quizos keeping them current and topical.

“Origins of Quizzo can be traced back to Ireland, where pub trivia games with similar format have been played for a long time before Quizzo’s inception.

The restyled format and modified game were brought over to Wildwood, NJ, where Pat Hines started running it and eventually exported it to Philadelphia. Hines brought the first “Quizo” to Philadelphia in 1993 at The New Deck Tavern in University City. In 1995, the second “Quizo” in Philadelphia began at Fergie’s Pub, which was run by Hines as well.”
